How to Melt Wax Off Candle Frames in Under 3 Minutes (Water Method)

This tutorial shows how to remove wax from candle dipping frames using a water-based method that is significantly faster than traditional wax melt-off. We melt wax off our own frames in about 3 minutes per frame using this process. Results will vary depending on your setup, candle thickness and operating temperature, but the method outlined here is designed to get you as close to that level of efficiency as possible.

This is the fastest, most effective technique we have found, using the DigiMash filtration insert for capturing wick debris from candle frames with the DigiBoil electric kettle for candle wax melting.

Why Water Is the Fastest Way to Remove Wax from Candle Frames

We recommend, if budget and space allow, dedicating a DigiBoil unit strictly to melting off your frames. The main reason is speed: using water instead of wax is roughly 10x faster. In addition, if your DigiBoil is filled with wax, that kettle is no longer available for production. You cannot be dipping candles and generating sellable product while it is tied up slowly melting off your frames. There is also a capital cost to consider. Keeping about 70 lbs of wax in a kettle for this purpose alone represents nearly $1,000 in tied-up inventory at about $14/lb, when the same task can be accomplished with water at negligible cost.

In practical terms, frame cleanup can become a bottleneck without a dedicated melt-off setup. It is easy, especially in a small business, to overlook the cost of time spent on slow cleanup. If your effective time is worth $40 to $50 per hour, that cost adds up quickly. A dedicated setup helps keep production moving and makes better use of both your equipment and your time. With a working sales channel, the investment can often be recovered quickly through improved efficiency.

How to Set Up a Candle Frame Melt-Off System

Insert your DigiMash into your DigiBoil and place one frame, configured to the candle height you plan to produce, into the DigiMash. This allows you to determine how much water to add so the frame will be fully submerged to melt off completely.

You should also leave adequate space in the DigiBoil for melted wax to accumulate without overflowing the kettle. In rare cases, such as when producing very tall or thick candles with many frames, you may need to melt them off in multiple sessions or drain water from the DigiBoil using the bottom spigot during the process, to create additional capacity for the melted wax. In cases like this, if space and budget allow, setting up more than one melt-off system may also be worth considering.

After adding the appropriate amount of water, set the DigiBoil to just below the boiling point of water (we set ours at 205°F). We recommend you do not boil the water, to prevent boil off, splashing and overheating of the wax. Remove the frame, place the lid on the DigiBoil and allow it to heat up. This typically takes about an hour depending on the starting temperature of the water.

This highlights another advantage of using water rather than wax: it reaches melt-off temperature up to 12x faster than beeswax, in our experience. A silicone belt heater, which we typically recommend for use with a DigiBoil wax melter due to its lack of insulation, is also not required for a water-based melt-off setup.

Once the water reaches operating temperature, add your waxed frame to the bath. Our frames, used for 1/4" diameter by 9" tall church tapers, melt off in just under 3 minutes each under these conditions. For comparison, the same process previously took 30 minutes or more per frame when using beeswax, and we typically run over a dozen frames in a single volunteer production session, requiring up to 6 hours of total melt-off time. This is why we recommend a dedicated, water-based melt-off system. It removes a major bottleneck and significantly improves throughput.

Pro tip: If you are making particularly thick candles, consider creating a simple lid for your DigiBoil with a center hole sized to fit the frame shaft. This helps the kettle maintain a more consistent operating temperature during melt-off. We use a round piece of plywood from a wire rope spool for this purpose.

Once the frame has melted off, grasp the shaft and briskly twist the frame back and forth. Keep the top ring inside the DigiBoil to avoid splashing hot wax and water. This motion helps dislodge wick pieces from the bottom ring now that they are no longer held in place by wax. It is not necessary to remove every piece at this stage, as any remaining fragments can be easily plucked off once the frame has cooled.

When allowing frames to drip into the kettle before hanging, tilt them so both rings remain over the kettle. This ensures the wax drains back into the kettle rather than onto your work area. The exact angle will depend on the candle length setting you are using.

After all frames have been melted and dripped off, turn off the DigiBoil and remove the DigiMash insert. Do not skip this step, as it makes wax recovery from the kettle much easier later. Allow the insert to cool on its support wire before storing it for future use. You can then inspect the inside of the insert and see the wick debris that has been captured and kept out of your kettle.

Once melt-off is complete, allow the kettle to cool so the wax layer floating on top of the water can solidify. This may take up to 24 hours. If the wax has not fully hardened, you can press a handle shape into it with your fingers to make removal easier later.

If the wax has fully solidified, one effective removal method is to drill into it using a handheld drill with an extra-long bit at a shallow angle. This allows you to lift the disc out using leverage, rather than relying on the bit to pull straight up, which typically does not provide enough grip due to the weight of the wax. If you are working with only a few frames, the disc may be thin enough to simply tilt and remove by hand.

Beeswax shrinks when it cools, so the harder the disc, the smaller its diameter, and the more clearance you will have for removal.

Regardless of the method employed, removal is also easier if you first take out the DigiMash support wire from its groove in the DigiBoil unit.

Another benefit of the water-based method of melting off your frames is the collection of impurities on the underside of the wax disc. If desired, you can scrape off and discard this contaminated layer, or remelt and filter it before returning it to your dipping kettle, as we do.

Common Questions About Removing Wax from Candle Frames

Can you remove wax from candle frames using water?
Yes. Hot water melts wax quickly and allows it to separate and float, making removal, particularly of impurities, faster and cleaner than using wax alone.

Why is water faster than wax for melting off frames?
Water transfers heat more efficiently and does not require the time or energy needed to maintain a large volume of melted wax. This significantly reduces melt-off time.

How long does it take to melt wax off candle frames?
This depends on candle thickness. Using a water-based system, the frame used in this demonstration was cleaned in just under 3 minutes, compared to 30 minutes or more using wax. Regardless of your candle thickness, water will be an order of magnitude faster than using wax.
